Dawn

May 2010

The sun is rising. When did night turn into morning? We invent words to describe the world, and after a while we forget that what is real is the world and not the words. The world is not halved into day and night; it is endless* and cyclical existence. I stripped away convenient convention, and I think I found some semblance of eternity.
Keep stripping. Strip away price tags: what exactly does your money buy? Strip away meaningless pleasantries: are you saying anything of substance? I can strip everything down, but no one likes what's left. So I carefully add the layers back and watch the way people move and talk and live. I watch her cover up her disinterest with vacuous chit-chat. I watch him cover up the meager worth of his possessions with pride in their high price tags. More than disdain or pity, I feel helpless. So I go with the flow, but I keep my mind wide open for everything else that's pouring in.

* Relative to an individual human's timescale. I won't be around for the heat death of the universe, but I hope I'll be around for the next groundbreaking discoveries regarding the nature of dark matter and energy.
